The Evolution of Boxing Games

boxing gamesThere is such a large variety of boxing games on the market today that it is hard to imagine a time when there were only two or three games to choose from. Although these type of fighting games have been around for decades, they were rare when video games first became popular.
The first boxing game created had a simple name – Boxing. It was designed by Activisionand was released in 1980 for the Atari 2600. This game featured a top view of the ring and was easy to play and understand. Punching an opponent gave you one or two points with close punches earning more points than long range punches. The player with the highest score after two minutes was deemed the winner. There were no levels or challenges and only one opponent was available to choose from. It was a simple game that lacked many features common today.
One of the most popular early generation games was called Mike Tyson’s Punch Out. It launched in 1987 for the NES gaming platform. Punch Out was a big step up from Boxing by introducing realistic graphics, multiple opponents and a variety of fighting techniques. It was a more humorous attempt at a boxing game while still providing a realistic experience by allowing the user to vary punching, stamina and speed.
The first 3D boxing games came out in 1992 with Evander Holyfield’s Real Deal Boxing and in 1999 with Ready 2 Rumble. These games featured Ringside boxing gloves, Nike shoes and Everlast boxing rings which made the game a lot more realistic along with providing the game makers with a little advertising income.
Electronic Arts created one of the most popular boxing game series in history from 1998 through 2011. It started with Knockout Kings I in 1998, Knockout Kings II in 2000, Knockout Kings III in 2002, Fight Night in 2004 and Fight Night Champion in 2011. Electronic Arts set the standard for boxing games we see today.Although the retro games can still be fun and can provide a bit of nostalgia, there are so many other great boxing games on the market. You don’t need a gaming system to play them either. There are boxing games found on smartphones, computers and tablets. Even the online games are much better than games found in the past. There is definitely not a shortage of boxing games in today’s world.
Not only are the graphics better when it comes to games today but the amount of options available are endless. Now you can fight celebrities, animals, cartoon characters, ghosts, zombies, dinosaurs and everything else you can think of. You can create your own character and have boxing matches in a variety of places such as in the woods or in the city. There is literally something for everyone when it comes to boxing games. Whether you are searching for a fun and hilarious game or something more realistic with amazing graphics, there is a game out there that is perfect for your style of play.
